FactPower: Facts, figures, and talking points for Resistance activists.
FactPower.org was launched in May of 2017, in response to the spotty availability of information in the fight against the American Health Care Act (AHCA, a.k.a. Republicare). As the House of Representatives frantically negotiated terms of the bill and drafted amendments, details of bill were mostly unavailable to activists (not released by the GOP) and often became a matter of conjecture. Information from the press was often inaccurate and quite late to filter through to activists. The GOP finally introduced the bill and rushed it to a vote the same day, leaving activists scrambling to find the information they needed in time to do anything about it. Then detailed information about the bill hit the more mainstream press outlets that night and the next day, too late to help the activists on the front lines.
This problem was made worse by the fragmentation of the grass-roots Resistance effort. As of the inception of the FactPower project, the Indivisible Project had registered 5800 Resistance groups -- at least two in every Congressional district in the nation. Communication between groups was often sporadic. Communication failures resulted in missed opportunities, and duplication of research efforts lead to waste of valuable time and resources that could be better spent fighting the Republican agenda. A clearinghouse for Resistance data was sorely needed.
This project was spearheaded by a tiny circle of computer nerds, research wonks, and one social media advisor, who feel our greatest impact in the Resistance is achieved from the anonymity of an Internet connection. We freely contribute our time without compensation or recognition, and we pay the costs of the website out of our own pockets.
ABOUT THE WEBSITE
FactPower.org is an information-dense site. It is designed less to be "pretty"/"fluffy" and more to be thorough. Each bill gets its own web page, which links to relevant documents and analyses, Internal (FactPower) analyses and interpretations, and printable lobbying materials. Most links are annotated, so that they are easy to find again. If you are working on a particular bill, you can bookmark the FactPower.org page for that bill as your gateway for keeping on top of it. If you set up an RSS feed for the page, you can also receive notification whenever something changes. (Please note that the design of this site works with most browsers to show you updated material since your prior visit. However, just to be sure, you might try hitting "reload" or "refresh" when you absolutely need the most current information.)
Although we do quite a lot of research ourselves, we depend on YOU to tell us if we've missed something or to forward us anything useful that needs to be shared with other activists. The intent of this site is to be a national clearinghouse for Progressive activist information. This website is an ad-free zone, with no sound, no videos, and no cute graphics dancing around on your monitor! (You're welcome.)
Are you a research wonk who wants to fight in the the Resistance from behind your computer monitor? Then FactPower.org needs you! Please contact us about being a regular (or even irregular) contributor to this project.
